This painting is of two taxidermy birds I studied in the Berlin Natural History Museum. Their colour and perfect condition along with their spotlit position was very striking.
In this painting I wanted to highlight the artifice of their new environment in the museum; I created a grid and enhanced the dramatic shadow around them.
The style of brushwork is a mixture of impasto layers built up.
The title refers to their being chosen to be collected and frozen in time.
I often work from collected animals, from zoos, museums and live and dead animal display. For me these creatures and their loss of wildness is incredibly poignant.
