Categories // News Hits 5224

We are pleased to announce a new collaboration with UK's foremost biro artist Niki Firmin. Niki created a new Cross River Gorilla portrait; an intimate image which capture the essence of a young baby gorilla in her signature style. The painting is called 'Hanging On' referring to the young gorilla hanging on to its mother, and to survival.

The painting is called 'Hanging On' referring to the young gorilla hanging on to its mother, and to survival. Currently there are only about 250 Cross River Gorillas left in the wild. The recent senseless killing of a male Cross River gorilla underlines the importance of effective conservation measures.

In a global petition, which attracted almost 75,000 signatures from 196 countries, local and international participants urged the Government of Cameroon to quickly establish new Cross River Gorilla reserves. The African Conservation Foundation (ACF) is working together with local partners and the Cameroon government to set up a new conservation complex in the Cameroon Highland rainforests.

Niki Firmin is gifted with the ability to capture the essence of the animals she engages with. It is ultimately the creative processes of nature and what can be done with the paintings to support conservation that inspires her creative endeavours.

"There is a unique opportunity to make a real difference through this art work." says Niki Firmin. ACF Director, Arend de Haas adds "We need to bring a much greater awareness of the plight of the Cross River Gorilla in order to give them the best chance of survival."

Niki Firmin: "We are aiming to raise £20,000 for the establishment of the new gorilla reserves, through the sale of prints of this very special piece of Biro Art. As usual with my Wildlife Conservation Art Projects there is the opportunity to acquire a Museum Quality Limited Edition Giclee Print, providing you with a valuable piece of art for generations to come."

Print numbers are restricted to only 250 (in recognition of the number of these precious Gorillas left), with each one being personally numbered and signed by Niki Firmin. In addition each one will come with its own Certificate of Authenticity guaranteeing its originality.
